Pediatric CPR: Critical Skills for Child Emergencies

When it comes to child emergencies, are essential for parents, caregivers, and first responders. Knowing how and when to perform pediatric CPR can save the life of a child in distress. Amerimed CPR is proud to offer professional pediatric to ensure that all those who are charged with protecting our children have the proper training for any situation.

Every minute counts when treating a child in distress. Therefore, it is critical to know and understand pediatric CPR guidelines. The American Heart Association (AHA) has created specific guidelines for performing CPR on infants and children based on their age, size, and physical abilities. It is important to note that if the child is not responsive or breathing normally, then cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) should be started immediately.

The important components of pediatric CPR are similar to adult CPR, but with minor adjustments for infants and children. In general, the intervention includes compressions and breaths performed at a certain rate with appropriate depth based on the patient’s age. For example, for an infant, chest compressions should be done by using two fingers in the center of the chest at a rate of 100-120 per minute. Whereas, for a child over 8 years old, compressions should be done by using two hands in the center of the chest at a rate of 100-120 per minute. After 30 chest compressions, 2 breaths should be given while tilting the head back and lifting the chin up until no more air escapes from the nose.

Before performing pediatric CPR, it is important to check for signs of circulation in order to avoid any further harm. These include looking for signs of responsiveness, checking for breathing, feeling for a pulse, and noting skin color changes or movements. Once these signs are determined, it is essential that the correct technique is used to provide proper support to the child’s cardiovascular system.
